Tripartite Consciousness and Tripartite Themes

Chapter 2 lays the theoretical groundwork for a tripartite treatment of literary themes. Drawing on the Kantian philosophical-literary tradition and Karl Bühler’s psychological-linguistic theory, the ethical themes of Auden’s poetry are grouped under the headings of cognition, emotion, and conation, thus providing a basic framework for the book.
