Nutrition and Lifestyle Management in Menopause
摘要
Menopause is a significant physiological phase in a woman’s life, marked by the decline of ovarian function. With the average age of menopause in Indian women occurring earlier than in the West, timely nutrition and lifestyle interventions are critical for improving quality of life and preventing long-term complications. This is an area which needs more attention. This chapter explores evidence-based strategies for dietary and lifestyle modification during the menopausal phase and the peri- and post-menopausal years. Key dietary recommendations include adequate protein intake, complex carbohydrates with low glycaemic load, healthy fats, and micronutrients essential for bone and cardiovascular health, such as calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and phytoestrogens. Hydration and weight loss by portion control and anti-inflammatory food further support metabolic balance. Lifestyle approaches, including structured physical activity (aerobic, resistance, and flexibility training), stress management, mindfulness practices, sleep hygiene, and social connectedness are emphasised for holistic well-being. By integrating nutrition science, physical health strategies, and mental-emotional wellness, this chapter highlights a preventive, patient-centric approach to managing menopause by holistic mind body reset. Practical frameworks, sample dietary patterns, and lifestyle modifications are provided to empower women and healthcare professionals in transforming menopause into an opportunity for health optimisation and long-term health.
