Globalisation, Modernisation and Secularism: The Example of Islamic Schools in Singapore
摘要
This chapter examines how educational globalisation versus educational localisation play out in madrasahs (Islamic schools) which are private schools in Singapore. The focus is on how one Islamic school in Singapore implements major changes to its curriculum to equip its students with globalised competencies. It is argued that globalisation, interpreted as modernisation, is generally accepted by the Islamic school in Singapore. But the Islamic school does not accept globalisation in the sense of secularism. Instead, the school asserts and affirms educational localisation through its Islamic beliefs, values and approaches to education. The globalising efforts of the Islamic school, it is maintained, reflect modernisation within a religious worldview. The example of Islamic schools in Singapore shows how educational stakeholders of private schools resolve a potential tension between the global and local by selecting appropriate globalised educational ideas and practices that are aligned with their local, religious outlook, mission and lifestyles.
