Resilient Cities Reimagined: Towards Transformative Growth Through Ecological Innovation

The study aims to explore the complex relationship between urbanization, new development, and spaces for well-being of the society with a special emphasis on the negative role of the uncontrolled urban sprawl. Since the population and economic needs of societies continue to grow, urbanization provokes increased infringement of vital open or underutilized areas. Those spaces, developed in the outskirts of cities without planning, become the central hub of activities (economic, social, cultural, and sometimes developed into green spaces for multiple use etc.) for the nearby communities developing an ecosystem. The uncontrolled development not only endangers the authenticity of these spaces, but also carries out the displacement of traditional communities. This disrupts their economic and environmental spheres, social structures, and cultural identities. The study highlights the new developments caused by the unplanned urbanization and without community appreciation disrupting the ecological systems of the area. To address these challenges, the study advocates for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to nurture resilient cities, ensuring urban sustainability amidst unplanned urbanization. The NBS are not only necessary for human well-being but also required to repair the broken biosphere in order to enrich the biodiversity. The selection of the abandoned/underutilized spaces under the flyover in developing countries, such as Pakistan was used as a sample. It explored the implementation of NBS for nurturing the resilient cities in the South Asian context. The study concludes by advocating for a holistic approach for urban design/planning for new developments (like extension of road networks, flyovers, and underpasses). Furthermore, it also deals with the unplanned urbanized areas (without any land use plans mostly) with the amalgamation of NBS solutions to nurture the resilient cities.
