The concluding chapter summarizes the literature on friendship and commentary about the topic in the Medieval period, stretching from the Early Middle Ages until the Renaissance. The writings and writers on spiritual friendship are discussed separately for each of the Abrahamic religions—Christian friendship, Islamic friendship and Judaic friendship. Concentrated mostly in the High and Late Middle Ages are the secular writers on friendship, brotherhood and chivalric love. There is a short reference to political friendship, in particular as part of political alliances of the Medieval period. To conclude are the ‘last words’ of the author—a brief reflection on the relevance of looking at Medieval friendship as a topic worthy of study in the troubled times of the first quarter of the twenty-first century. This is followed by a comprehensive bibliography.
