Anti-Epileptic Medications in Behavioural Regulation
摘要
This chapter outlines the role of anti-epileptic medications within neurobehavioural paediatrics, particularly their targeted use for irritability, aggression, mood dysregulation, and tic disorders in children with autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions. Although traditionally viewed as seizure medications, several anti-epileptics provide meaningful benefits in emotional and behavioural regulation when used thoughtfully and with appropriate monitoring. Sodium valproate is discussed as an option for irritability in autism—particularly when intellectual disability or epileptiform activity is present—while topiramate is examined for its modest but valuable role in tic management. Overall, this chapter provides a concise, practical framework for considering anti-epileptics as part of a broader therapeutic strategy in complex paediatric presentations.
