Practice Principals in Psychopharmacotherapy
摘要
This chapter outlines the essential principles that underpin safe, thoughtful, and collaborative psychopharmacotherapy in children and adolescents. Drawing from practical clinical experience, it emphasises the importance of weighing disease burden against treatment burden, engaging young people and their carers as active partners in decision-making, and ensuring information is delivered clearly and succinctly. It highlights the necessity of planning for alternative treatment pathways, minimising unnecessary polypharmacy, and utilising structured approaches such as medication ‘detoxing’ when clarity has been lost in complex cases. The chapter also discusses clinician’s responsibility to reassess long-term medication use, consider pharmacogenetic insights when appropriate, and maintain robust follow-up systems with support from general practitioners. Finally, it underscores the value of ongoing peer consultation, acknowledging that shared wisdom and collegial guidance remain central to good clinical practice.
