SHINE: Secure Hybrid Image Encryption with Automata and Chaos in IoT

With the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), image protection has become a major concern, as IoT devices are resource-constrained and require efficient processing. This paper proposes a lightweight image encryption method that combines the Cellular Automata (CA) Rule 90 and the Hénon map. The image is first divided into its RGB components. The Hénon map introduces strong confusion, whereas CA Rule 90 ensures further diffusion within the same process. The experimental results indicate high security, with NPCR at \(99.62\%\) and UACI at \(49.86\%\) , thereby effectively mitigating attacks. The simplicity and efficiency of this method make it highly suitable for IoT applications. Further research will consider integrating with other cryptosystems and ensuring scalability across various IoT platforms.
