Archbishop Dominic Tang Yee-ming’s Relations with the Foreign Missionaries

Dominic Tang Yee-ming (鄧以明, 1908–1995) is remembered for his enduring contributions to the Roman Catholic Church, particularly during times when the Church faced significant challenges, such as political persecution and cultural tensions. Tang was imprisoned in China from 1958 to 1980, for a total of 22 years and four months. His incarceration was a result of his refusal to renounce the Vatican and join the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which was controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. Tang’s unwavering loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church and his faith led to his arrest and imprisonment. In 1981, at the age of 73, he was made Archbishop of Guangzhou (Canton) by Pope John Paul II. Tang’s time in prison was a powerful testament to his faith and moral courage. His suffering mirrored the trials of many Church leaders who endured persecution, making him a symbol of steadfast faith and dedication to Christ.
