The Life and Legacy of Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi

Paul Shan Kuo-hsi was a Taiwanese Jesuit priest, Bishop of Kaohsiung, and a cardinal of the Catholic Church, known for his leadership, pastoral care, and contribution to modern Taiwanese Catholicism. Born in Puyang, China, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1946 and was ordained in 1955 in Baguio, Philippines. After completing a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he was appointed Bishop of Hualien in 1979. Transferred to the Diocese of Kaohsiung in 1991, Shan advanced the Church’s mission in Taiwan’s dynamic society, with an emphasis on education, social justice, and interfaith dialog. In 1998, he was elevated by Pope John Paul II to the College of Cardinals. He retired in 2006 and passed away in 2012. This chapter pays special attention to Shan’s leadership in education, social justice, and interreligious dialog, as well as his role in strengthening the indigenization of the Catholic Church in Taiwan. By situating Shan’s ministry within the broader political, cultural, and ecclesiastical transformations of twentieth-century Taiwan, the chapter highlights his enduring influence as a bridge-builder between faiths, cultures, and societies.
