Thomas Tien Ken-sin originates from a simple family from the western part of South Shandong. The article highlights his family origin, his education and formation to the priesthood guided by Divine Word Missionaries serving in Shandong. The article further elaborates on his election as the 22nd Chinese prelate heading the new ecclesiastical unit Yanggu-Puoli. The article concludes with reasons for him to be chosen as the first Cardinal of China and the Far East of the Catholic Church and the complex challenges he faced.
