Introduction

On October 28, 1926, six Chinese bishops were consecrated by Pope Pius XI (1857–1939, r. 1922–1939) in Rome, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Chinese Catholic Church. This event took place more than two centuries after the appointment of the first Chinese bishop, Luo Wenzao, OP (also known as Gregorio Lopez 羅文藻, 1615–1691), in 1674. The consecration of these six bishops was a recognition of the capabilities of the Chinese people, demonstrating their ability to assume the same responsibilities as foreign missionaries. Through diverse scholarly perspectives, the contributors to this book examine the evolving roles, challenges, and achievements of Chinese cardinals and bishops since 1926.
