After saccharides ingested as food are digested to monosaccharides by digestive enzymes, glucose and fructose are absorbed by intestinal glucose transporters located at the apical membrane of the intestinal epithelial cells, mainly by sodium co-transporter glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) and glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5), respectively. To prevent diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases, we searched for food components that inhibit SGLT1 and GLUT5 activity using cultured cells and found that several phytochemicals inhibit SGLT1 and GLUT5 activity. These food components are expected to prevent diseases caused by excessive saccharide intake.

摘要
