AI and the Future University: Strategic Leadership, Culture, Diversity and Global Equity

  • Yousif Elsamani

摘要

This chapter examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping the identity, governance, and public mission of the modern university. Moving beyond a narrow focus on technical adoption, it argues that AI challenges the very foundations of knowledge production, teaching, institutional authority, and cultural representation. The chapter shows how universities are being compelled to respond through strategic leadership, organization-wide capability building, and new governance frameworks that emphasize responsibility, transparency, and human-centered values. It also foregrounds the cultural and geopolitical stakes of AI, particularly the risks posed by English-dominant large language models, unequal access to computational resources, and the concentration of technological power in a few institutions and regions. By linking institutional transformation with multilingualism, epistemic justice, and global equity, the chapter presents universities as both innovators and guardians: institutions that must protect academic integrity, cultural plurality, and social trust while helping shape the future of AI as a public good. Its central message is that the future university will be defined not by how quickly it adopts AI, but by how wisely it governs it.
