Introduction: From STS forum Dialogue to Global Vision

This introductory chapter frames the volume as a response to a defining paradox of the present age: science and technology have never been more powerful, yet the social, ecological, and geopolitical conditions that shape their use have become increasingly unstable. Drawing on the STS forum chair’s opening vision, the chapter situates the book within a longer civilizational transition—from extraction to circularity, from fragmented expertise to connected knowledge, and from technical possibility to collective responsibility. It argues that emerging tools, especially artificial intelligence, can help integrate dispersed knowledge, identify systemic bottlenecks, and accelerate implementation, but only if they remain governed by human purpose and dignity. The chapter introduces the STS forum’s broader mission of aligning science, technology, and society, and presents the volume’s three-part structure as an effort to move from dialogue to direction across AI, sustainability, health, innovation, communication, and diplomacy. Its core claim is that the future of humankind depends not only on discovery, but on the capacity to connect knowledge, redesign institutions, and act together with urgency and wisdom.
