Media Narratives Regarding Refugees from Ukraine in Selected Polish Opinion Weeklies
摘要
This study presents an analysis of the media narratives featured in two Polish opinion weeklies, Polityka and Do Rzeczy, that have different ideological affiliations but similar high readership regarding Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Poland since February 24, 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. The study aims to illustrate and compare two dominant narratives—“exclusionary” and “solidarity”—that were used to shape the public perception of people fleeing the war. It also captures the process of narrative evolution in the different phases of the “refugee crisis,” taking into account the ideological differences between the two weeklies. Through a multi-faceted approach based on qualitative analysis of terms, metaphors, and topoi, the chapter identifies diverse pro- and anti-Ukrainian framings that could provoke conflicting audience reactions, thus contributing to the polarization of Polish society.
