The technology of single roll heavy reduction in a continuous casting process of more than 20 mm at the end of the slab solidification is an important technical means to improve the qualification rate of flaw detection and other comprehensive performance of the heavy plate. In this paper, the processes of the slab direct rolling and the slab first by single point heavy reduction then rolling were simulated by the finite element software ABAQUS. The equivalent strain and the cumulative deformation at the full plate thickness during the two production processes were calculated and analyzed. The results show that the heavy reduction is beneficial to increasing the strain and the cumulative deformation in the core area of the plate. In industrial production, the 252 mm plate with good performance was successfully produced by the 400 mm slab through single roll heavy reduction and rolling, and the compression ratio during the rolling process was only 1.6.
