Research on Epileptogenic Focus Localization Using Virtual Electrical Stimulation on Epilepsy Networks
摘要
Epilepsy is a disease characterized by abnormal discharges of brain neurons, leading to brain dysfunction. Studies have shown that approximately 30% of patients have drug-resistant epilepsy, which can be treated by surgical removal of the epileptogenic zone. Currently, the surgical seizure-free rate is around 50%. Determining the location of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is a key factor in the success of the surgery. This paper proposed a method using virtual electrical stimulation with neural computational models to locate the EZ. The virtual seizure onset regions were compared with the patients’ surgically resected brain regions. The localized EZs in patients with good outcomes are more consistent with the surgically resected areas, which emphasizes that the proposed method may provide critical information for epilepsy surgery planning.
