Explorations of Assessment Strategies for the Conservation of the Historic Fabric Encompassing Varied Habitation Patterns and Water Systems: A Case of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India
摘要
Indian cities are rich in history, art, and architecture, and they represent a synthesis of these elements. Every town or city transforms at a distinct rate along the timeline, and several variables contribute to this. Every city, regardless of size or tier, has its own historic fabric in multiple strata that has fused with its expanding settlement. Prior identification and comprehension of these ingrained and interrelated layers of history in the municipal fabric has become a critical point for long-term development. Over nearly 200 years, Bhopal has been exposed to six settlement patterns ascribed to various rulers of the city and their diverse philosophies. The purpose of this study is to comprehend the transforming nature of Bhopal and its many settlement patterns that appeared during the timeframe with a close connection to the city’s water infrastructure. Furthermore, the paper investigates evaluation strategies that are already being instilled and their practical approach in Indian Context for subsequent conservation and derives conclusions subjected to the prioritization of refurbishment guidelines taking the case aspect of Bhopal to understand the favorability and shortcomings of these evaluation approaches. It first investigates the natural factors that led to the formation and establishment of this settlement, followed by a change in the political scenario, various reforms that occurred over time that led to the formation and flourishment of this independent Muslim state, and the further evolution, transformation, and characterization of the architectural patronage. There has been a need to reflect on the change in architectural patronage that has resulted in a diverse typology of places. The majority of studies are carried out in order to illustrate the reformist ideals and progressive attitude taken by the Rulers of Bhopal, and it was necessary to analyze the allocation of places and buildings given to them. It was necessary to analyze the allocation of areas and structures that were result of dynamic change. Comprehensive secondary research has been undertaken to comprehend the many facets of the evolution of cities’ historic fabric and its consequent evolution. In order to reach the goal, the research is exploratory in character and takes a qualitative approach to settlement patterns, typology of structures, and relative analysis with hierarchical change, as well as phase wise growth of the city. The study relies on the secondary sources and observable phenomena observation study has been used as a basic research tool. Mapping, photo documentation, and inventories have been used to organize the architectural and spatial data. Analytical tools such as correlational studies, comparative analysis, and overlaid reading of the observed and documented data have been thoroughly used to derive the conclusions. A reconnaissance study was undertaken in order to validate this research framework. By examining the case of Bhopal, the study focuses to create a practical approach to similar contexts.
