From 1997 to 2002, I collaborated with Professor Christian Lamouroux from France on an investigation into North China’s folk water management in the rural areas of Shanxi and Shaanxi. We began by examining folk water conservancy steles and the management of autonomous water conservancy organizations by farmers to study the history and mechanisms of grassroots social operation in North China. One of our case study points was the “Four Societies and Five Villages” in the mountainous dryland region of southern Shanxi.
