A fundamental premise of field preparation is that the ethnographer’s representation of any culture is an ideal composite of that cultural entity. This representation does not concretely exist in the mind of any one individual being studied. For each other, the cultural system of that society is also external. Folklore fieldworkers attempt to find a theoretical framework to explain folk society.
