This chapter systematically introduces the development of road engineering, including the historical evolution of pavements in China and abroad, pavement classification and structural characteristics, as well as the functions and economic attributes of roads. It also outlines the main contents of pavement planning, design, construction, and maintenance management, providing a theoretical foundation and technical reference for engineering practice.
