Re-presenting Macao and Macanese Narratives through Rewriting: A Case Study of Amores do Céu e da Terra
摘要
This chapter investigates translation as rewriting through a case study of Amores do Céu e da Terra, which selectively translates and rewrites Ling Ling’s Chinese essay collection Youqing Tiandi. Drawing on narrative theories, it analyzes how translation agents reconstructed Macao narratives through generic shift from Chinese sanwen to Portuguese contos, selective appropriation of twelve from 56 texts foregrounding Macanese themes, and extensive rewriting for Lusophone readers. The chapter examines collaborative work between literal translator and rewriter, showing how institutional patronage prioritized representational utility. Analysis of paratextual framing reveals how publisher and translator agency shaped the reconstruction of Macao narratives, concluding that literary translation functions as a powerful discursive tool for mediating cultural identity.
