Mediating Cultural Identity through Fiction Translation: A Corpus-Assisted Study of the Translation of Culture-Specific References in A Trança Feiticeira
摘要
This chapter presents a corpus-assisted case study of the Chinese and English translations of Henrique de Senna Fernandes's canonical novel A Trança Feiticeira. Using the UAM Corpus Tool to analyze culture-specific references (CSRs), it reveals that the Chinese translator adopted a target-oriented approach using predominantly domesticating strategies, aligning Macanese identity with Chinese cultural repertoire. In contrast, the English translator adopted a source-oriented approach using foreignizing strategies that preserve cultural peculiarities for scholarly readers. Through textual analysis and interviews, the chapter demonstrates that these divergent approaches result from the translators' distinct habitus, concluding that translation strategies fundamentally reconstruct Macanese cultural identity differently for respective target readerships.
