Work-Related Issues in Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer

Cancer diagnosis and treatment in adolescents and young adults (AYAs), the age group between 15 and 39 years, have tremendous psychosocial and economic impacts on AYA lives. Career and employment-related issues have unique aspects in this life stage, because many AYAs are in preparation of or in the early stage of their careers, and thus work-related issues are closely related to their future financial well-being, self-esteem, and relationships. Socioeconomic status at the time of diagnosis and the cancer diagnosis itself affect the post-treatment employment status. Access to a multidisciplinary support system providing psychological and physical support, as well as cancer survivor-oriented career counseling, work placement, and employment sustenance support, is desired, but the establishment and coordinated implementation of such a system remains a challenge. Effective identification of AYAs with cancer in the healthcare setting, thorough assessment of their physical condition and cognitive function, timely referral to appropriate supporting services such as social-welfare counselors and career and employment services, workplace improvements to accommodate return-to-work, and the comprehensive education of AYAs themselves and professionals in the healthcare, education, and employment sectors are important components in overcoming the stigma and work-related concerns of AYA cancer survivors and will help them reach their potential.
