An Examination of Wang Wei’s Relationship with Chan Monks of the Northern and Southern Schools
摘要
Wang Wei (701–761) lived during the High Tang period, a time when Chinese Buddhism was at its peak. During this era, the rapid spread of Chan Buddhism and the intense struggle for religious orthodoxy between the Northern and Southern Schools—represented by Shenxiu in the north and Huineng in the south—became a major intellectual and religious issue in mid-Tang China. This conflict profoundly influenced social life and the spiritual outlook of the intellectual class.
