Innovative Food Supply Chain and Its Efficient Functioning Under European Green Deal

This study investigates the price volatility of major food commodities in the Slovak market from the year 2006 to 2023 and evaluates its implications for the food supply chain. By analyzing comprehensive datasets on producer and consumer prices, the research aims to uncover patterns and fluctuations that characterize market dynamics over the selected period. Special attention is given to the interpretation of volatility trends and their effects on both producers and consumers, highlighting the broader socio-economic consequences. The findings reveal significant periods of instability, which pose challenges to market predictability, stakeholder welfare, and supply chain efficiency. These challenges are particularly relevant in the context of the European Green Deal, which emphasizes sustainable food systems, climate resilience, and fair economic returns for producers. Time series of prices of the main agricultural and food products were collected from the Agricultural Market Information Database of Slovakia (ATIS) on a monthly basis in the time range from January 2006 to December 2023. To model the dynamics of price volatility of major agricultural commodities, study utilizes GARCH models, specifically BEKK. The study concludes with a discussion on the necessity of targeted policy interventions and risk management strategies to mitigate adverse impacts and enhance the resilience of the Slovak food system.
