Small-Molecule Drug Discovery: Evolution of Medicinal Chemistry and Holistic Approaches
摘要
Throughout the twentieth century, the development of rational drug design revolutionized medicine, enabling the precise targeting of specific biological pathways using synthetic compounds. While this advancement has offered significant therapeutic breakthroughs, challenges such as drug toxicity, resistance, and regulatory complexities remain prevalent. However, cutting-edge technologies, such as computational biology and artificial intelligence, are pushing the boundaries of drug discovery, particularly in the treatment of complex diseases like cancer and infectious diseases. Drugs can be classified in various ways, including their chemical structure, mode of action, or therapeutic application. One important classification is based on their acidity or basicity, which significantly impacts pharmacokinetics and the potential for drug interactions. This chapter delves into the evolution of medicinal chemistry, tracing its roots from the traditional use of medicinal plants to the modern focus on single-molecule synthetic drugs. It also highlights the growing significance of personalized medicine and explores the integration of Halal-Tayyib principles, aiming to create a more inclusive and holistic approach to healthcare.
