Diseases of Ophiopogon japonicus
摘要
Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl., which belongs to the genus Ophiopogon in the Liliaceae family, is a perennial herb that primarily utilizes its dried tuberous roots for medicinal purposes. Its earliest mention can be found in the “Shan Hai Jing - Zhong Shan Jing,” noting, “The region is abundant with locust and paulownia trees, and among its herbs are peonies and xun dong,” where “xun dong” refers to Ophiopogon japonicus. Documented as “Maidong” in the “Shennong Bencao Jing” during the Eastern Han Dynasty, the name was consistently used since the Ming Dynasty, as noted by Du Wenxian in “Yao Jian.” The 2015 edition of the “Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China” lists “Maidong” as its official designation. Authentic Maidong medicinal materials are mainly from Santai, Sichuan (known as Sichuan Maidong), and Hangzhou, Zhejiang (known as Zhejiang Maidong); the latter is recognized for its higher flavonoid content, while the former is noted for its higher diosgenin content.
