The Thistle’s Defiance: Scotland’s Enduring Quest for Sovereignty Amid English Union
摘要
Scotland’s history with England is a tapestry of resilience, marked by recurrent affirmations of national identity amid shifting political unions. Unlike the more straightforward narratives of conquest in Ireland or Wales, Scotland’s story is layered with alliances, rebellions, and negotiated unions. This complexity arises from dual influences: the cultural divide between Lowlands and Highlands and religious tensions between Presbyterians and Episcopalians. Politically, Scotland navigated three regimes: full independence, union under a shared crown with its own parliament, and full union under a common parliament. These did not unfold linearly but alternated over centuries.
