Ancient scripts tell us that the Sinhalese (from Sinha: lion) of Indo-Aryan origin left North India in the fifth century BC to settle on the island. They were led by Prince Vijaya and landed on the west coast of the island. It is believed that the Tamils were probably later immigrants and arrived from central, eastern, and southern India from about the third century BC to around 1200 AD.
