Continuing the synoptic exploration in the previous chapter, this chapter broadens the exploration by examining the disputants’ preferences in the framing of their attitudinal expressions. This chapter specifically investigates three key dimensions of attitudinal communication: (1) the scaling of attitudinal complexes through intensification, mitigation, or neutral framing (exploring the cooccurrence of options in the attitude and graduation systems), (2) the dialogistic positioning of these complexes (examining the cooccurrence of options in the attitude and engagement systems such as ‘monoglossed’, ‘proclaimed’, ‘disclaimed’, ‘entertained’, or ‘attributed’), and (3) the simultaneous modulation of attitudinal complexes with both scaling and dialogistic positioning (examining the cooccurrence of options in all three Appraisal systems: attitude, graduation, and engagement).

摘要
