The advent of generative AI is fundamentally transforming the landscape of English education and will require a reconsideration of the traditional roles and competencies of English teachers. This chapter explores how the development of generative AI in the English education environment is substantially changing the role of teachers. Specifically, teachers will have to shift from their traditional position as instructors to that of learning facilitators who support learners in autonomous learning of their own English through communication with the AI. As learners increasingly engage with the AI to produce and comprehend language, teachers will need to adapt their pedagogical approaches to effectively guide this new form of language learning. The development of these pedagogical strategies requires an approach that fosters learner autonomy through peer communication, while adhering to established principles of English teaching. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop pedagogical frameworks that enable learners to acquire important self-evaluation skills and metacognitive strategies using AI. This paradigm shift in English language education generates a new perspective on language competence, that of AI-enhanced linguistic competence, and suggests the emergence of a new style of English communication in the AI era.

摘要
