This chapter argues that critically examining various perspectives on a particular methodology—taking immersion programs as a case in point—can help educators reflect on and reframe their pedagogical practices. Section 1 references central handbooks to outline how immersion programs have been understood in language education discourse. Section 2 provides an overview of the historical development, achievements, and current status of immersion programs in Catalonia, Spain—home to the world’s largest-scale implementation. Section 3 reflects on conceptualizations of immersion programs based on the preceding analyses. Section 4 presents implications from this reflection for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education contexts.
