Re-envisioning Language Education for Communication: Insights from the Japanese Business Sector
摘要
This chapter explores the imperative to revamp English language education for Japanese business professionals, drawing on extensive survey and interview research conducted by Naito et al. (English proficiency for business communication: Factors for breaking through language barriers, Asahi Press, 2024). Despite the general emphasis on achieving high scores on proficiency tests, such as a TOEIC score of 850 or more, our findings indicate that this alone does not suffice for effective business communication. We argue for a dual approach to English language training. First, business professionals should learn to quickly formulate responses using fundamental English, which they have acquired in middle school, in order to facilitate immediate communication needs. Second, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) methodologies should be adopted to focus on the language and communication strategies prevalent within specific discourse communities in business settings. This approach aligns language training with actual business practices and the specific communicative functions encountered by professionals. By integrating these methodologies, we provide actionable insights for English educators, which should enable them to better prepare Japanese business professionals for the nuanced demands of global business communication
