This chapter investigates the effectiveness of group-based syntactic parsing activities in improving learners’ reading comprehension skills, focusing on syntactic parsing as a component of lower-level processing skills that are crucial for bottom-up reading. Employing the Meaning-Order Approach, students worked in groups for one semester to parse sentences into syntactic components, aiming to enhance their ability to analyze clause structures. The effectiveness of this instructional method was assessed using multiple-choice pre- and post-tests and a questionnaire survey. A comparative analysis of the test results indicated a statistically significant improvement in the students’ ability to grasp clause structures at first sight. Notably, students with initially lower scores exhibited greater improvement than their peers, suggesting that this approach is particularly beneficial for struggling readers. Questionnaire responses revealed that the activity raised students’ awareness of careful clause-level analysis and enhanced their overall reading comprehension abilities. These findings highlight the importance of intensive reading activities, such as group-based syntactic parsing exercises, into reading curricula to enhance syntactic parsing skills and improve learners’ reading comprehension.

摘要
