Ensuring physical access to groceries is a prerequisite for residents to continue living in a given area. This issue is especially critical for people without a driver’s license, such as many older adults, whose mobility options are often limited. In Japan’s super-aged society, such problems are now emerging even in suburban areas near Tokyo—some of which are characterized by steep topography. This chapter proposes a method for evaluating physical accessibility to grocery stores, taking into account differences in age, geographical conditions, and mobility. Using this approach, we examine food-access challenges in the suburban Tokyo region, where demographic aging is rapidly advancing. The discussion contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to “leave no one behind.”

摘要
