In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive review of the history of facial aesthetics research and also detailed introduce some classical facial beauty prediction models and facial beautification models. We begin with early studies based on empirical rules and aesthetic principles, followed by traditional approaches relying on handcrafted features, then discuss recent advances in deep learning-based end-to-end methods. We also review the progress in 3D facial aesthetics analysis. In addition, we highlight the limitations and challenges faced by existing approaches. These methods and issues will be further explored and discussed more thoroughly in the subsequent chapters of this book.
