Study on Inhibition of Low Carbon Steel Corrosion Using Jamun (Syzygium cumini) Fruit Seed Extract in a Salt-Containing Medium

The wide practice of conventional corrosion protection using synthetic chemical materials for low-carbon steel is pervasive. However, the use of synthetic chemical materials poses serious health and environmental concerns. One potential alternative to inorganic inhibitors is Jamun (Syzygium cumini) fruit seed extract due to its biodegradability, affordability, and environmentally friendly nature. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Jamun seed extract as a green inhibitor on the surface of low-carbon steel. A total of 18 specimens were immersed in glass containers, divided into six groups at durations of 120, 240, 360, 480, 600, 720, and 840 h. Low carbon steel was immersed in a 3.5% NaCl corrosive solution, and the extract was added at concentrations of 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 ppm. The chemical components in the extract were analyzed using GC/MS and FTIR tests, showing the presence of compounds, such as caryophyllene, hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, and functional group bonds N and O in the absorption process. The lowest corrosion rate occurred on the tenth day of immersion with a concentration of 2500 ppm, at 3.38 mpy, and an efficiency of 43.85%. Furthermore, the compound structure and the highest efficiency achieved demonstrate the effect of Jamun seed extract on low-carbon steel corrosion protection.
