Contemporary Meanings and Values of the Sacred Space: The Conceptions of “Natah” and “Lebuh” in Traditional Balinese Settlements Case Study

Architecture has played a pivotal role in establishing connections between the divine and the sacred by integrating tangible elements of the physical realm with the intangible essence of nature. This linkage is exemplified by the conceptualizations of “natah” and “lebuh” within traditional Balinese settlements, which encapsulate nuanced equilibrium. This research attempts to explore the deep and rich cultural layers embedded in the spatial conceptions and mindsets of Balinese people. An exploratory qualitative interpretation approach is used to interpret the meaning and value of this spatial conception. The research objectives are to provide an understanding of how space is created, influenced by the harmonization of individuals’ physical dimensions with their inner selves and fostering balance and harmony with the universe and its contents. Such comprehension is vital amidst contemporary architectural discourse, which predominantly emphasizes physical aesthetics at the expense of spatial quality, potentially undermining the essence that sustains the locale’s identity.
