Bandar Grissee Continuity: Exploring Adaptive Reuse Opportunities Through the Lens of Heritage Value Matrix

摘要

Preserving heritage is fundamental to sustainable development, fostering continuity amid rapid change. However, heritage preservation faces challenges, particularly from urbanization. This study explores adaptive reuse opportunities for heritage buildings in Bandar Grissee using the Heritage Value Matrix (HVM) framework. The research includes chrono-mapping and value mapping to identify which heritage elements are suitable for adaptive reuse, promoting sustainability. Results indicate that lower-value elements like space plans, skin, services, and other objects are more adaptable for reuse. While existing literature extensively discusses tangible and intangible aspects of heritage preservation, few studies utilize HVM to understand their interplay. This study aligns with Brand’s theory of shearing layers, highlighting the high potential for adaptive reuse despite challenges from government changes and private ownership. By prioritizing high-value elements for preservation and intervening in lower-value ones, adaptive reuse can enhance both tangible and intangible heritage aspects, contributing to sustainable cultural conservation.
