Design Principle and Setting of Colonial Fort in Java Case Study: Vastenburg Fort, Vredeburg Fort, Van Den Bosch Fort, Willem I Fort, and Van Der Wijk Fort

The former colonial fort that still exists today is a cultural heritage building that has value and must be preserved. Therefore, this could be the basis for the former colonial fortress to be revitalized. This research aims to explain the principle of Colonial Fortress in Java with case studies of Fort Vastenburg, Surakarta; Fort Vredeburg, Yogyakarta; Fort Van Der Wijk, Kebumen; Fort Van Den Bosch, Ngawi; and Fort Willem I, Ambarawa. Because of the significant historical significance of heritage buildings, this presentation will address conservation issues arising from the distinctive shape and particular features found exclusively in colonial forts among heritage buildings. Each of the five case studies featuring adaptive reuse is a fort situated in the center of a historic city, making it an excellent spot for tourism. It is crucial to thoroughly examine the dimensions, form, and organization of interior spaces inside the fortified legacy prior to rendering definitive judgments on adaptive reuse.
