Harmony in Transition: Adaptive Architectures of Old Buildings with New Elements Around the Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta has a lot of historical buildings that are living proof of the city’s long history, especially those located along the cosmological axis. This symbolic spine runs through Yogyakarta’s cityscape. Because of modern needs, these old buildings are changing in ways that are carefully balanced, keeping the old and adding new things. This research looks closely at the rules for adding new and modern materials to old buildings, focusing on restoring, reconstructing, and rehabilitating them. The process of deciding how to change old buildings is shown against the background of Yogyakarta’s cosmological axis, a cultural and symbolic centre. The cosmic axis is not just a path but also a force that shapes how the city’s architecture changes over time. By looking at visual and contextual data, this study shows how custom and innovation work together in some situations. The aim is to understand more about adaptive architecture in culturally rich environments by showing the complicated dance between preserving history and meeting the changing needs of Yogyakarta’s busy cityscape. The results of this study indicate that Yogyakarta is a city where the past and present unite along the cosmological axis.
