Evaluating the Effect of Daylighting Conditions on Energy Efficiency in Yankari Museum, Nigeria

摘要

The primary function of a museum is preservation and display of artifacts and relevant collections for educational, entertainment and research purposes. However, these could only be achieved through careful use of daylight for preservation and display, which consequently reduces the need for energy consuming. It is of utmost importance that passive techniques and their application are integrated in contemporary design and construction of museum galleries. The study is based on data obtained through computer aided daylight simulation by Design Builder version (6.1.0.006) software using radiance for calculations and real weather data for Yankari in Bauchi. A physical observation and survey on the artifacts were conducted as sensitive artifacts may be subjected to damage cause by light exposure. Various condition and state of artifacts in relation to intensity of daylight fenestration into the gallery and on the surface of the artifacts were measured using Benetech digital lux metre GM1020 version. The results revealed that there is present of high amount of daylight that exceed maximum level on artifacts which affects it quality and low illuminance deep into the museum which concludes that daylighting condition in the museum is not properly controlled and hence, it is recommended that shading device or ultraviolet filter system should be applied.
