Review on Soundproof Ventilation Techniques: Study on Ventilation and Acoustic Performance

Natural ventilation has been known as a cost-effective and sustainable solution to provide good indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in the hot-humid climate. Nevertheless, in the urban setting, opening windows also allows outdoor noises to penetrate the indoor spaces. This problem forces occupants to close the window, which will lead to poor IAQ and thermal comfort. This research aims to provide a solution to the aforementioned conflicting issues, which are ventilation performance and outdoor noise reduction. Firstly, several noise resonator techniques is compared. Then, a noise silencer based on the best resonator performance is developed. Finally, the detailed assessments of ventilation and noise reduction performances of selected (Soundproof Ventilation) SPV techniques, i.e. noise resonator, window plenum, and acoustic louver were conducted through simulation. The simulation results show that the soundproof ventilation is 24.1 dBA, 9.1 dBA, 2.7 dBA, 2.6 dBA SPL reduction and 0, 0.036, 0.209, and 0.362 discharge coefficients for noise silencer, plenum window, chevron acoustic louver, and single bank acoustic louver respectively. Discussion to improve the SPV technique was also conducted.
