Affordance of Play Space at the Elementary School Outdoor Environment
摘要
School playgrounds offer opportunities for children’s play activities. Adequate play space with all necessary equipment has a significant impact on encouraging children to engage in physical activities and explore various ways of playing according to their perceptions. Children’s perception is greatly influenced by their ability to identify and understand the potential opportunities present in their environment. It is important to understand how the physical environment has affordances that facilitate various play activities. This study was conducted at Public Elementary School (SDN) Mendungan 2 to investigate how children perceive the affordance of a school outdoor environment for their play activities. The study used behavior mapping on physical environment characteristics as well as student play activities. Findings revealed that children tend to play on flat and smooth surfaces, as well as in sheltered areas that offer different ways of playing. In addition, some factors, such as school rules, hindered children from properly perceiving the elements of their surroundings. In addition, children of different ages use environmental elements as play equipment in different ways.
