The Transformation of Shape and Function of Rumah Gadang Nuraını and Sıtı Fatımah in Nagarı Sumpur, Indonesia for Heritage Preservation
摘要
Rumah Gadang, a traditional house of the Minangkabau people, is at risk of extinction in Sumatra Barat due to the deteriorating condition of old buildings and the challenges associated with constructing new ones. Although the construction procedures are documented in Minangkabau literature (Pidato adat), there is a lack of clear technical data on how to build these houses. For nearly a century, no new rumah gadang projects were initiated until 2014, when an effort was made to reconstruct a new rumah gadang in Nagari Sumpur Batusangkar known as Rumah Gadang Nuraini and Siti Fatimah, following a fire incident. Therefore, some changes happened to these two houses in order to make them survive in this modern era for a very long time. The research aims to to identify the changes made to these two houses to ensure their longevity in the modern era while preserving their original shape and value. Utilizing a qualitative research method, this study compares the old and new buildings through observation, documentation, interviews, and literature review. The findings reveal that various innovations have been implemented in these houses, employing different strategies based on their value and condition.
