Identifying of Impacts, Barriers, and Opportunities of Food- Sensitive Planning in Karawang, Indonesia

Karawang is one of the largest rice producers in Indonesia. At the same time, this region is facing massive industrialization, especially close to the toll road. It leads to mass land conversion from agriculture to housing and industry. This also leads to doubt about their food security in the future. Food-sensitive planning approach considering food security and land-use conversion to attain food system sustainability in the region. This approach ensured food security in Karawang and made rice production there not much affected by mass industrialization. This paper gives the policy review on regulations related to food-sensitive planning in Karawang by identifying impacts on the economy, social, and environmental aspects, and also on barriers and opportunities. It also gives recommendations for the Karawang Regency Government to evaluate zoning and development plans based on a food-sensitive approach to reach balances between the economic impact of industrialization and ensuring food security.
