Experiences of Female Employees in the Male-Dominated Transport Sector
摘要
The chapter focuses on the women and men employed in the public transport sector of Delhi. Given the low participation of women in the sector, the objective of the chapter is to explore the interplay of supply and demand side factors in recruitment, retention, and progression of women in the public transport workforce. It aims to understand the challenges of women employed in the sector with respect to their family support system, working conditions, attitude of male co-workers and passengers, access to basic facilities, and safety and security issues. The chapter is based on a survey conducted in the capital city of Delhi and focuses on the employment of women by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the provisioning of transport services. A qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews was adopted to capture the real-life experiences of women and men working in the sector. The contribution of the chapter lies in exploring the impact of government initiatives and the attitude of male employees towards the inclusion of women in the male-dominated work culture.
