Artificial Intelligence in Wastewater Management: Opportunities, Challenges, and Emerging Trends
摘要
The water is a vital resource for social well-being, economic development, and sustenance of the environment. The water quality is being threatened by disposal of partially treated or untreated wastewater from industries, domestic, or other polluting sources. The quantum of wastewater generation is projected to increase further with urbanization and economic development. Particularly, wastewater management at urban centers in India is a challenge owing to poor monitoring and assessment of pollutants, and inadequate infrastructure development. The water contaminants pose potential threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. The wastewater is a valuable resource for addressing challenges of water scarcity, economic development, and environmental protection in the era of climate change. There is need of robust and intelligent wastewater management systems for the effective monitoring and control of water pollution, recovery of value-added products, and productive reuse of treated water with application of data-driven state-of-the-art technologies. This chapter highlights potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), simulation, and sensor-based technologies for wastewater management. The opportunities, challenges, and emerging trends in integrating the above technologies for real-time monitoring, control, optimal operation, and improved decision-making in smart wastewater management are evaluated in light of prevailing regulatory frameworks and standards. Further a comprehensive bibliometric analysis on AI application in sustainable industrial infrastructure for wastewater management using SCOPUS database is performed.
